It was that time of year, the season when robbers usually wrote letters and slipped them into the mailboxes of all the residents.
Like every household, the Ayenifuja’s letter arrived with the same threat- Prepare the way for us.
And so Mr. Ayenifuja, unable to relocate temporarily like some of his neighbours, told Danjuma his guard to tell the robbers if they asked that he and the family had travelled.
But Danjuma was the kind of person who took the expression Honesty is the best policy quite literally.
The day eventually arrived, and the masked men with the shiny AK-47s banged at the gate with the confidence of expected guests.
With their eyes gleaming with malice and guns aimed, they asked about the Ayenifujas.
Danjuma ignored that voice screaming within him and answered.
My boss said I should tell you he is not around… Abeg I no sabi lie.
Abeg I no sabi lie — Please I cant tell lies.
